The Sruti School of Liturgical Music was founded in the year 1988 in the Orthodox Theological Seminary, Kottayam. The late Metropolitan Paulose Mar Gregorios realized the need for strengthening our musical tradition and it is with this in mind that he founded the Sruti School with Fr. M.P. George as its director. The Zumoro Choir was a brainchild of the late Metropolitan and has been promoting Syriac music since 1996. The name 'Zumoro' which means 'Song' in Syriac was given to the choir by the late Paulose Mar Gregorius.
Zumoro Choir has a membership of about 50 comprising of men and women from all walks of life. The Zumoro Choir is well known all over Kerala. The choir has given a number of public performances and has won many prizes including the first prize at the Orthodox Choir Festival in Poland. The choir gets a number of invitations to sing in churches all over Kerala and outside Kerala. The choir has accepted many such invitations and has sung in Orthodox, Catholic and Marthoma churches.
The primary aim of the choir is to support the H. Church in improving the quality of music and standardizing choral singing in all the parishes. This has been possible due to the untiring efforts of its Director Rev. Fr. M.P. George. The Zumoro choir meets every Friday at the SRUTI School of Music located in the premises of the Orthodox Theological Seminary, Chungom, Kottayam. New songs composed by many well wishers of the church have been notated and harmonized by Fr. M.P. George and has been sung by the choir. Many of these songs or hymns have became very popular and has been accepted and sung by other churches. The choir has brought out a Holy Qurbana C.D in English. (Click here for the songs)
